Last week I shared a little bit about my gluten intolerance. I am also lactose intolerant. I have always had a little difficulty with dairy but we never really looked into it and just sort of ignored it.
A few years ago, I started to notice more and more the negative effect that dairy, specifically ice cream, had on me. One evening, my husband and I were running errands when we decided to get a late night snack. I got my favorite chocolate milkshake and it did not go well at all. After that evening, I decided that I was officially going to give up dairy (except cheese because it doesn’t effect me nearly as much as milk and ice cream does and honestly, I would probably die if I had to give up cheese). I went almost 2 full years without having dairy until a barista at Starbucks accidentally made my free birthday venti sized double chocolatey chip frappachino with regular milk instead of coconut milk. Let’s just say that the next two days were NOT fun. It had been so long since I had it that my symptoms got worse when exposed to it. Now I am extra careful when ordering at a place such as Starbucks.
The great thing is that there are lactose free milk and ice cream options (see photo below). I’m not a fan of almond milk and somethings just don’t taste right with coconut milk so I have found lactose free milk to be my go-to source of calcium. I still don’t much like the taste of milk though so I mainly use it to cook and bake with.
