Motherhood: The Daily Grind

First of all, can I just say that being a mom is HARD WORK!!! Can I get an AMEN from the mom crowd?!?!

The moment I became a mom, life forever changed. I was used to being a part time CT technologist at a local hospital and running a photography business. I was NOT used to being home all day, every day, doing the same things, all day, every day. I’m talking about the daily grind of motherhood. Specifically, a stay at home mom (sahm). Being a sahm has taken a lot of getting used to… and I’m still not 100% there.

Anyone else feel this way??? or is it just me? please tell me it’s not just me…

Anyway, while I absolutely ADORE my little guy, staying home with him (especially in the winter) at this age where he doesn’t really do a whole lot, can become quite… what’s the word… boring. Yes, I said it, being a sahm can be a little boring at times. Why is this? is it because I don’t have anything to do? CERTAINLY NOT!!! I have a business to-do list the size of Texas. O.k., that might be a slight exaggeration but it is three pages long, so close enough. So how can I be so busy yet so bored at the same time?

Here is a look into my typical day:

  • pump
  • get Josiah up & change him
  • feed Josiah solids and a bottle
  • lay Josiah down to play
  • wash bottles and spoons
  • flip Josiah from belly to back because he can’t do it himself and is screaming his head off
  • fill a few bottles with milk to have them ready for later
  • clean up spit up on Josiah’s hands, face, and toy
  • change Josiah’s clothes and bib again because they are now covered in sweet potatoes
  • put Josiah in exersaucer
  • eat some breakfast in peace… hahahahahaha… in peace… that’s funny
  • clean off Josiah’s hands, face, and toy because he spit up again
  • put Josiah in his play yard
  • empty the diaper pail
  • flip Josiah over because once again he is on his belly with his face covered in orange spit up and can’t roll over
  • clean and change Josiah… again
  • Finally put Josiah back down for a nap

phew… I get some me time to relax and enjoy my day… you know what I’m going to say… hahahahahahaha!

This is how it feels: pump, wash bottles, clean spit up, flip baby over, entertain baby, fill bottles, change baby, do laundry, take out the trash, repeat. In other words, I do the same things over and over and over and over… you get the idea.

when I look up a see this face      Columbus-Ohio-baby-photographer    it is COMPLETELY worth it!

Remember moms, you are not the only one who feels this way, and it’s o.k. to feel a little bored and overwhelmed sometimes.

well, gotta go… mom duty calls… my son woke up and he’s on his belly.

Baby Products We Love | Columbus Ohio Photographer

Baby Products We Love | Columbus Ohio Photographer

Before our son was born, I asked moms on Facebook to tell me what their must-have baby items were. Now, we have created our own list of baby items we love.

Josiah loves looking at his teddy bears swing back and forth while he is in his glider

Graco Glider Elite 2-in-1 Gliding Baby Swing

Josiah sleeps best when swaddled up. We love the convenience of the zip up swaddle.

SwaddleMe Pod Swaddle Wrap

We have a messy eater and these Tommee Tippee Bibs are by far the best. They fit better than most, they cover more, and they have an extra thick dribble catcher around the chin. We also love all of our other Tommee Tippee products.

Tommee Tippee Closer To Nature Milk Feeding Bib

Josiah loves his white noise machine to help him sleep. We love that it is battery operated and portable.

Homedics Sound Spa Mybaby White Noise Machine

This wipes container has plenty of room for an entire pack of wipes. The weighted top plate makes it easy to quickly grab just one wipe at a time.

Ubbi Baby Wipes Dispenser with Weighted Plate

This diaper pail is made of steel, does not require any special bags, and traps odors really well.

Bubula™ Jr. Steel Diaper Pail

We love these sleepers with inverted zipppers that make it really easy to change his diaper quickly.

Cloud Island Sleep N’ Play Pajamas

*We were not paid to endorse any of these products.

During the second week of my son’s life, he hit a growth spurt that caused him to want to eat almost constantly. Due to his desire to eat every time I got near him and because of my own recovery, I was unfortunately unable to photograph my own son’s newborn pictures. Thankfully, I was able to find a local photographer with an opening. Christa of Gable Photography was kind enough to squeeze us in for a last minute newborn session. Here are a few of my favorite images from his session.

During the first two weeks as new parents, we learned a lot. For example, we learned that we can go a lot longer without sleep than we ever thought possible. We also learned how blessed we are to have each other. I have fallen even more in love with my husband since sharing the experience of becoming parents. There is no way I could have done this without him.

In the first two weeks while I was still recovering from child birth, Jay helped me in more ways than I can count. From warming up meals and running errands to feeding me while I fed our son, there was nothing he wouldn’t do. He was also a wonderful emotional support while I adjusted to being a mom. If I had to describe my husband in just one word, it would be selfless. My favorite part of those first two weeks was watching how amazing my husband was with our son. He loved taking photos of him, holding him while he slept, and simply watching everything he did. It was clear that he was completely in love with him.

Below is a collage of several of the cell phone pictures Jay took of Josiah. Note: not all photos were taken in the first two weeks.

Our Birth Story | Columbus Ohio Photographer

On Friday, September 8, 2017, the contractions began. By the time Jay arrived home from work, they were only about two minutes apart and lasted for about 45 seconds. At that point, we decided to go ahead and make our way to the hospital.

When we arrived, I had not progressed far enough so they instructed me to walk around the hospital. After several trips around the inside and outside of the hospital, and a few episodes of getting sick, it was finally time to be re-evaluated. Unfortunately, I had not progressed any further during that hour. However, my blood pressure was very high so the doctor on call decided to go ahead and admit me and speed up labor by introducing Pitocin. By the time I reached the delivery room and they officially admitted me, I had progressed enough on my own that they decided I wouldn’t end up needing the Pitocin after all. About one and a half hours and four attempts, I finally had an IV. Once I received enough fluid, they eventually started my epidural. I rested for about an hour and a half after that before the nurse checked me again and asked if I was ready to push. After the first push the nurse called the doctor and told her she needed to get there right away. Approximately nine minutes and four pushes later, Josiah James Lytle was born at 3:41 am on September 9, 2017. He weighed 7 lbs 15 oz and measured 20 inches long. The hospital staff was wonderful and overall I had an excellent birth experience.

Thank you to everyone for your prayers and support, and to all my wonderful clients who have been so understanding during my maternity leave. I am looking forward to the rest of 2017 and can’t wait for some new photo opportunities in 2018.

I went to college with Isaac’s mom and I have been so blessed to stay in contact with her over the last several years since then. She was so kind to allow me to photograph her first baby when I was just getting into photography and now I have the privilege of photographing her second baby. Isaac’s 6 month photo session took place at Inniswood Metro Garden’s in Westerville, Ohio.
